What is the treatment for Anxiety Disorders?

Anxiety disorders are usually treated by medication, therapy, psychological help, group therapy, and home help like meditation and self coping methods.

The common medications used for anxiety treatment are:

  • Xanax (alprazolam) - panic, generalized anxiety, phobias, social anxiety, OCD

  • Klonopin (clonazepam) - panic, generalized anxiety, phobias, social anxiety

  • Valium (diazepam) - generalized anxiety, panic, phobias

  • Ativan (lorazepam) - generalized anxiety, panic, phobias

  • Buspirone (BuSpar) (slow acting, acts like a light tranquilizer)

  • Beta Blockers (stop the adrenaline from flowing, also known as "fight or flight".

Sometimes these medications can have side effects like:

  • Nausea

  • Headaches

  • Dizziness

  • Upset stomach

  • Diarrhea

  • Dry mouth

  • Drug Dependency

  • Irritability

They do not happen to everyone, but do have a likeliness to happen to some. Sometimes medication can be dangerous to people under the age of 18, and have adverse side effects that are more harmful than helpful, such as thoughts contemplating suicide, self harm, overdose, and addiction.

Group therapy is proved to be very helpful, in letting people reach out to others who face a smiliar problem. It offers new opportunity to express how they feel to someone or a group of people that know where they're coming from.
